Genus ( / ˈdʒiːnəs / pl.: genera / ˈdʒɛnərə /) is a taxonomic rank above species and below family as used in the biological classification of living and fossil organisms as well as viruses. [1] In binomial nomenclature, the genus name forms the first part of the binomial species name for each species within the genus.
The genus name is the first word of a binomial scientific name (the species name is the second word) and is always capitalized. One example of a plant genus containing many species is Rosa, which contains more than 100 species of roses. In contrast, the genus Ginkgo is monotypic, containing only the common ginkgo (also called the maidenhair tree).
