UTC−4 ( EDT) Congressional district. 7th. Website. ingham .org. Ingham County ( / ˈɪŋəm / ING-əm) is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 284,900. [2] The county seat is Mason. [3] Lansing, the state capital of Michigan, is largely located within the county.
Called a "cabinet county," it bears the name of Samuel D. Ingham, who was Secretary of the Treasury under President Jackson at the time. The area was a forest wilderness filled with wide tamarack marshes, and was sparsely populated. Because of its dense forest, early Michigan settlers tended to avoid Ingham County and to settle its perimeters.
