Interlochen Arts Academy. In 1962, Interlochen Arts Academy opened its doors as the nation’s first independent boarding school for the arts. In its first year, the school had 135 students and a staff of 34. It combined rich experiences in the arts with challenging and comprehensive college-preparatory academics.
Our umbrella organization, Interlochen Center for the Arts, encompasses six distinct program areas, each founded to propel arts education and engagement: Interlochen Arts Camp, Interlochen Arts Academy, Interlochen Online, Interlochen Public Radio, Interlochen Presents, and Interlochen College of Creative Arts.
During the 1960s, Interlochen opened Interlochen Arts Academy, launched Interlochen Public Radio, and formed Interlochen Presents. With support from the Ford Foundation, the Creative Writing department officially launched at Interlochen in 1976.
