I use Expedia occasionally to book international flights as they can be cheaper than the airline. No big issues. Usually you can request a seat at booking but end up calling the airline or going to their website after booking to confirm. And some airlines don’t allow advance seat selection or charge for it. Not sure about virgin.

Expedia seems to be better at handling complex itineraries than airline web sites - in my experience. But you may find that real (brick and mortar) travel agents are better still. I would have a word with a real travel agent - if they can come up with a similar price to Expedia then go for it.
