Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata LH (29 July 1904 – 29 November 1993) was a French-Indian aviator, business magnate, entrepreneur and chairman of Tata Group . Born into the Tata Family of India, he was the son of noted businessman Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and his wife Suzanne Brière.
When JRD was elevated to the top post in the Tata group in 1938, taking over as Chairman from Sir Nowroji Saklatvala, he was the youngest member of the Tata Sons board. Over the next 50-odd years of his stewardship the group expanded into chemicals, automobiles, tea and information technology.

J. R. D. Tata was made chairman of the Tata Group in 1938. Under his chairmanship, the assets of the Tata Group grew from US$101 million to over US$5 billion. Starting with 14 enterprises, upon his departure half a century later in 1988, Tata Sons had grown to a conglomerate of 95 enterprises.

Tata Airlines, the seed of the idea that would grow to become Air India, is founded after tremendous effort by JRD Tata. He pilots the inaugural flight from Karachi to Bombay — which he describes as the moment “a dream became a reality”.
