Maybach ( German: [ˈmaɪbax], MY-baakh) [1] is a German luxury car brand owned by and a part of Mercedes-Benz AG. The original company was founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son Karl Maybach, originally as a subsidiary of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH, and it was known as Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH until 1999.

The founding of Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau-GmbH Bissingen followed on 23 March 1909. Wilhelm Maybach’s son Karl, who also designed the new Zeppelin engine, took over the technical management. In 1912 the firm, renamed Luftfahrzeug-Motoren-GmbH, relocated to Friedrichshafen. Father and son each held a 20-percent share in the company.
