MSGTA came into force in 1993 – comprising PNG, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Fiji became a party to the MSGTA in 1996. Focused on gradual reduction of tariffs (import duty) on goods imported from MSG countries in order to enhance intra-regional trade. Rules of origin are used to distinguish between MSG goods and goods from other countries.
Several Melanesian states are members of intergovernmental and regional organizations. Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu are members of the Commonwealth of Nations and are also members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group .
