2 days ago · United States Capitol, meeting place of the United States Congress and one of the most familiar landmarks in Washington, D.C. Possibly the most culturally and historically important building in the United States, it has been home to Congress since 1800. The following year Thomas Jefferson became the first president to be sworn in on its steps.
The United States Capitol Complex is a group of twenty buildings, grounds, and facilities in Washington, D.C., that are used by the United States Congress, and Federal courts. The buildings and grounds within the complex are managed and supervised by the Architect of the Capitol.
The history of the United States Capitol Building begins in 1793. Since then, the U.S. Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended and restored. The Capitol that we see today is the result of several major periods of construction; it stands as a monument to the ingenuity, determination and skill of the American people.
In addition to its active use by Congress, the U.S. Capitol is a museum of American art and history. Each year, it is visited by an estimated 3-5 million people from around the world. A fine example of 19th-century neoclassical architecture, the U.S. Capitol combines function with aesthetics.
