The anticipation is palpable as enthusiasts await the next installment of the legendary BMW M3. Based on the recently redesigned BMW 3-series, the M-branded variant is expected to resurrect the nameplate's storied driver engagement. With reports confirming that it'll offer rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission, BMW sounds committed to making that rumor a reality. We do know that the 2021 M3 will have a twin-turbo inline-six-cylinder engine that will make between 473 and 503 horsepower, which will ensure rapid acceleration. The ultimate models will highlight the sports sedan's performance potential with track-ready hardware that should challenge rivals such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and the Mercedes-AMG C63.
Now that BMW has reinvented its iconic 3-series for an all-new generation, the requisite M3 model is waiting in the wings. We've even spied a camouflaged examplewearing what appears to be a wide-body kit, bigger brakes, and upgraded wheels and tires. However, we're still waiting on the German automaker to pull off the covers and release full specifications. That should happen sometime in the middle of this year, followed by the start of production and a launch for the 2021 model year.M3: $68,000 (est.)M3 CS: $99,500 (est.)
As with the forthcoming BMW M4, the M3 will feature a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. The same engine is under the hood of the BMW X3 M and X4 M crossovers, where it makes 473 horsepower (503 on Competition models) and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Bavarian automaker has also confirmedthat the next M3 will be available with a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Likewise, the sedan will offer an automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. Those powerful and engaging configurations will boast a reinforced structure, wider and stickier tires, and other performance hardware. The latter should include a standard set of adaptive dampers, optional carbon-ceramic brakes, and exclusive equipment for the anticipated Competition variant.
Neither BMW nor the EPA have released any information about the M3's fuel-economy estimates. The last generation was rated at up to 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, so those figures could deviate slightly. Once we have the official numbers and a chance to test the Bimmer on our 200-mile fuel-economy route, we can evaluate its real-world mpg.
Besides unique "M" badging and distinct trim details, the M3 interior is the same as the regular 3-series. That means the 2021 M3 will have the same design, passenger space, and outward visibility as its more pedestrian counterpart. While M cars are known for their heartier performance, they also meet or exceed the materials and build quality of the top-of-the-line 3-series. Of course, the M3 usually has more carbon-fiber and faux-suede accents for a racier aesthetic. It also should have more supportive front seats and comfortable accommodations for people traveling in the rear. Interior cubby storage is highlighted by a tray at the front and a bin at the back of the center console. The souped-up sedan also will benefit from a capacious trunk that held six carry-on suitcases on the 3-series we tested.
Since the M3 has always shared most of its standard infotainment and connectivity features with the regular 3, we expect that trend to continue on the next-gen version. That means the performance sports sedan should have a 10.25-inch touchscreen that is also controlled via a rotary knob and buttons on the center console. Along with gesture and voice controls, the system should include multiple charging ports and an optional wireless device-charging pad. BMW no longer requires a paid subscription for Apple CarPlay, but for some reason it still hasn't adopted Android Auto.
The 2021 M3 hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). While driver engagement is BMW's main priority with its M cars, some active-safety technologysuch as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, as well as front and rear parking sensors are expected to be offered.

The Competition package puts more muscle under the hood, bumping horsepower from 425 to 444. This represents an increase of 19 horsepower over that of the standard powerplant. According to BMW, this upgrade shaves one-tenth of a second from the M3’s zero-to-60-mph track time. Revised settings for the adaptive suspension. With the Competition package, the M3’s Adaptive M Suspension gets new settings in all three drive modes. These settings reflect a keener focus on handling and driving dynamics. More direct steering ratio. This optional package alters the M3’s steering ratio so it delivers improved responsiveness. New settings for the car’s stability control and active differential.
