     Java is by design not fit for duck typing. The way you might choose to do it is reflection:

     public void doSomething(Object obj) throws Exception {- obj.getClass().getMethod("getName", new Class<?>[] {}).invoke(obj);}

     But I would advocate doing it in a dynamic language, such as Groovy, where it makes more sense:

     class Duck { quack() { println "I am a Duck" }}-class Frog { quack() { println "I am a Frog" }}quackers = [ new Duck(), new Frog() ]for (q in quackers) { q.quack()}

     See this blog post. It gives a very detailed account of how to use dynamic proxies to implement duck typing in Java.

     In summary:

     • create an interface that represents the methods you want to use via duck typing
     • create a dynamic proxy that uses this interface and an implementation object that invokes methods of the interface on the underlying object by reflection (assuming the signatures match)

     It is hard to say whether Page Object Model is an example of encapsulation. However, as wiki says about encapsulation:

     In object-oriented programming (OOP), encapsulation refers to the bundling of data with the methods that operate on that data, or the restricting of direct access to some of an object's components. Encapsulation is used to hide the values or state of a structured data object inside a class, preventing direct access to them by clients in a way that could expose hidden implementation details or violate state invariance maintained by the methods.

     So if Page Object Model hides the values or state from direct access by other users, then it can be said that it is an exmaple of encapsulation.

     One of the ways to achieve encapsulation is to use setter and getter methods and access modifiers. Let me show an example:

     public class EncapsulatedPerson{ private string name;- public string GetName() { return name; } public void SetName(string name) { this.name = name; }}

     and Person without encapsulation. Any user of class NotEncapsulatedPerson can edit name:

     public class NotEncapsulatedPerson{ public string name;}

     This is an if statement:

     Everything in a Java program not explicitly set to something by the programmer, is initialized to a zero value.

     • For references (anything that holds an object) that is null.
     • For int/short/byte/long that is a 0.
     • For float/double that is a 0.0
     • For booleans that is a false.
     • For char that is the null character '\u0000' (whose decimal equivalent is 0).

     You can use something like Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory()

     and its counterpart Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory()

     to get an educated guess, but that doesn't account for objects that are GC'ed between calls.
