Hovis Mill on the Macclesfield Canal in the town. Macclesfield is the original home of Hovis breadmakers, produced in Publicity Works Mill (commonly referred to as "the Hovis Mill") on the canal close to Buxton Road. It was founded by a Macclesfield businessman and a baker from Stoke-on-Trent.

By the 1980s the tradition had all but died out, but in 2009 a group of like-minded folk came together to generate a vision for a festival of arts, culture and fun, based in the town centre and rooted in Macclesfield’s heritage and talents.
Macclesfield was the centre of the silk industry. The manufacture of silk-covered buttons began in the 16th century, and silk throwing was introduced in 1756, when the first silk mill was built. By the end of the 18th century the silk industry was flourishing, but silk production ceased in the late 20th century.

Macclesfield was named by the Davenport’s in honour of the Earl of Macclesfield in England, for whom George DAVENPORT was a steward. Streets around the town were named for Davenport family members and the two other proprietors – Luck and Cunliffe.
