Vermont/Santa Monica, like many of the B Line stations, was designed by an artist/architect team. For this station, artist Robert Millar collaborated with the architectural firm Ellerbe Becket with Mehrdad Yazdani as lead designer.

Back in the early 1990s, the Vermont/Santa Monica Metro station in Los Angeles showed how infrastructure can influence a place, and even the profession.

AIA, then with Ellerbe Becket (now the design principal of CannonDesign’s Yazdani Studio), the station features an almond-shaped canopy—internally illuminated and metal-clad—that looks like a streamlined piece of a train lifting above ground to beckon us aboard.

Different textures were incorporated into the design, with questions of existence etched in the concrete walls of the station.

Vermont/Santa Monica station is an underground rapid transit station on the B Line of the Los Angeles Metro Rail system. It is located under Vermont Avenue at its intersection with Santa Monica Boulevard, after which the station is named, in the East Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles.
