"Hubris made the angels of heaven into devils...
As the Vedran sun devours each planet one by one, residents of the ever more crowded Seefra-1 become unruly and a delegation is sent to the Andromeda Ascendant. As Dylan Hunt enters the conference room, Beka Valentine's voice crackles over the comm. She reports a Nietzschean craft approaching Seefra-5 that is in danger of being crushed by the planet’s unstable magnetic field. The craft won’t respond to her hails so she is en route to cut them off. Telemachus Rhade and Seamus Harper are already on the planet’s surface. The only remaining people are a fiercely devout religious sect which intends to remain on the planet. But the sect is beginning to fracture in the face of this catastrophe. The leader’s own sister contacted the crew, pleading for help for her people who are led to believe the danger is an elaborate hoax. Rhade and Harper finally track down the few willing evacuees but find them executed in a cave. As they investigate, an explosion shakes the cavern and the transmission cuts out.
Dylan is in the Command Center with Rommie and Doyle, digging up all they can on the sect leader, General Burma. He has led a life against all technology ever since his father died using a Tesseract machine of his own design. Most believe his claims of the hoax, with those who don’t meeting the end Harper and Rhade witnessed. The two are faced with the task of repairing the destroyed tesseract machine and talking sense into Burma, if possible. Harper stays put to work his magic while Rhade goes to negotiate. He finds the sect congregated, watching Burma chastise his sister for her betrayal. He drives his point home that those who use technology only wish to enslave them and, to remind her that technology brings only pain, he injects her with something that instantly brings her screaming to her knees. Rhade can’t bear to watch and leaps from his hiding place to help but is brought down immediately by Burma’s disciples. Rhade’s pleas for the people’s safety fall on deaf ears as he is taken to a dark cell.
Beka has managed to head the Nietzscheans off at the pass and boards their ship. She is dumbstruck when the three handsome crewmen meet her in the cargo bay but she quickly gathers herself and convinces them that she is their Matriarch. They promptly spoil her rotten with attention, massaging her body while feeding her exotic berries. She is all too happy with the treatment until she begins to feel woozy. She tries to stand but numbness is overtaking her. The Nietzschean leader chuckles and tells her they need her ship to make it to the surface. He leaves her and locks the door.
Burma’s sister, Ashael arrives to speak to Rhade. She sees he has taken a beating and treats his arms with herbs through the cell bars. She tells him she was injected with liquid-bots, specialized nano-bots used for stripping metal from Slipfighters. Her brother keeps them at hand as an example of technology’s evil. Rhade is beside himself with her brother’s arrogance, he insists she was right in calling for help but she won’t be swayed and leaves him.
Trance has remained aloof and distant this whole time, unfazed by the devastation her sun has unleashed. Dylan has become suspicious of this out-of-character display, believing she is not the old Trance they know. He gains nothing by confronting her, but her behaviour has piqued his senses and he is paying closer attention to her.
Rhade stews in his cell as large tremors rumble through the planet. Ashael appears again and dismisses the guard, saying she has come to check his wounds as her brother intends him for a bargaining piece. After she inspects him, she slips him a small cloth bundle containing the liquid-bot syringes and leaves. He squirts them on the lock and then calls the guard. When he approaches, Rhade smashes the guard's head with the door and escapes, failing to notice cloaked Trance lurking in the shadows. She brings the news to Burma in his quarters, telling him of his sister’s treachery before tesseracting back to Andromeda. Rommie turns the corner and offers any help she can but Trance declines. When Rommie presses the issue and touches her arm, she is blasted across the hall by a surge of energy. Trance apologizes and Rommie limps away. Dylan examines a damaged patch on her leg while she recalls what happened. Hearing it took place in the corridor, he rises to check the monitor but Beka interrupts on the comm. She tells him her situation and Dylan gathers himself to get his scattered crew out of danger.
•The title is a parody of "A Hard Day's Night".
