Carl Michael Yastrzemski Sr. (/ j ə ˈ s t r ɛ m s k i / yə-STREM-skee; born August 22, 1939), nicknamed "Yaz", is an American former professional baseball player who played his entire career with the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). He started his career primarily as a left fielder, but also played 33 games as a third baseman.
In 1979, Yastrzemski became the first American League player to tally more than 3,000 hits and 400 home runs, reaching both milestones that season. Yastrzemski spent his entire 23-year career in Boston, where he was an 18-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove Award winner.

The son of a potato farmer, Yastrzemski grew up in the small town of Bridgehampton, Long Island. He attended Bridgehampton High School, where he set numerous records in basketball, football and baseball. As a basketball player, he set the all-time individual conference scoring record of 628 points.
