David Raksin (August 4, 1912 – August 9, 2004) was an American composer who was noted for his work in film and television. With over 100 film scores and 300 television scores to his credit, he became known as the "Grandfather of Film Music."

Composer David Raksin wrote original music and adapted music from The River (a documentary film score by concert composer Virgil Thomson), featuring an adaptation of the hymn " How Firm a Foundation ". Although he recorded just under 30 minutes of music, much of it was edited out of the final cut.

The film's director, Otto Preminger , had originally wanted to use Duke Ellington 's " Sophisticated Lady " as the theme, but Raksin was not convinced that it was suitable.
