At home he was drawn to the bluegrass music of Bill Monroe, J. D. Crowe, and The Stanley Brothers. At the age of 13, after seeing Earl Scruggs on TV, he learned to play the banjo. In his teens he also learned acoustic and electric guitar.
An avid reader and history buff, Block discovered heroes in books and on vinyl, and found he could tell vivid stories with his own style of playing – and writing – songs. "Early on, when was first learning how to play guitar and banjo, I learned that I could put a feeling across within a song," he says. "I start with an image or a feeling.
How did you learn the Banjo, and what method of learning do you feel is most effective? I use a lot of different materials and methods. Early on I started learning both by tablature and listening, and in those pre-internet days before you could search out tablature for songs, it wasn’t long before I was tabbing out solos for myself.

Sep 19, 2018 · Ron Block has been an icon in the bluegrass banjo world for at least the last 25 years, the time he has been part of Alison Krauss & Union Station. Though he also plays guitar with Alison, the banjo world has especially embraced his playing, an affection he returns to them in kind.
