  1. Sep 27, 2016 · 18. The Shawshank Redemption (1994, Frank Darabont) Often films about prisons are about friendship. Men bond over few words and sometimes have to trust each other with their freedom when planning an escape together. “The Shawshank Redemption” is a bit of a different best though.

One of the main plot points of Friends is the struggle to find love. The following is a list of relationships the six main characters have had throughout the series, sorted by character.

    Barry Farber

Barry Farber was engaged to Rachel in 1994, but Rachel leaves him at the altar when she realizes she doesn't love him after finding herself more turned on by a gravy boat. Barry and Rachel briefly reconcile towards the end of season one after the former announces his engagement to Mindy Hunter. Barry and Rachel split up once again when Barry chooses to marry Mindy. Barry marries Mindy in the season two finale, "The One With Barry and Mindy's Wedding", where Rachel makes an appearance as one of Mindy's bridesmaids. Barry and Mindy get divorced in season six when Barry cheats on Mindy again.

    Paolo

Paolo dated Rachel for a while during season one. A dark, Italian man who could not speak English very well. Rachel's relationship with Paolo was based merely on sex. Rachel refers to her relationship with Paolo as the complete opposite of her relationship with Barry. Throughout the relationship, Ross was jealous of Paolo and constantly tricked him into calling himself mean names. Paolo would constantly buy Rachel jewellery, clothes, or shoes while he was in Italy. Rachel has Phoebe give Paolo a massage, but when Paolo makes a pass at her, Rachel breaks up with him. In season two, after Rachel finds out Ross is dating Julie, heartbroken and drunk, she has a one night stand with Paolo, but it doesn't amount to anything further than that.

    Ross Geller

    Paul the Wine Guy

Paul the Wine Guy was the first date of Monica's featured on the show. He appears in "The Pilot" in Season 1. Paul wins Monica's approval and a night in her bed when he feeds her a line about not being able to perform sexually since his wife left him. Later, she learns she's not the first of his dates to hear that line and dumps him, stomping on the watch he left on her floor for good measure.

    Alan

Monica dates Alan in "The One With The Thumb". The rest of the gang love him, so it is difficult for Monica to tell them when she decides to break up with him. However, Alan reveals to Monica during the break-up that while he really likes Monica, he can't stand her friends.

    Fun Bobby

Fun Bobby makes appearances in Season 1 and then again in Season 2. In "The One With The Monkey", he shows up at Monica's New Years Party. Everyone's excited to see "Fun" Bobby who doesn't live up to his name when he becomes depressed about the death of his grandfather. In Season 2, Monica gets back together with Fun Bobby, who now has problems with alcohol. Monica successfully tries to help him give up drinking, but once he does, he becomes dull Bobby and breaks up with Monica for developing a drinking habit of her own to combat Bobby's dullness.

    David

Phoebe and the sweet, geeky David meet when he was arguing with colleague Max during her song at the coffee house. She uses her intimidating presence to force David to explain and he blurted out that he was commenting that she was "the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen and was luminant with an unearthly grace". They stay together until New Year's Eve, when he is given the opportunity to go to Minsk to research 'distillation of sub-atomic particles'. He originally refuses because of his commitment to Phoebe, but she tells him he had to go because she realizes how much it had torn him and Max apart. David briefly returns from Minsk twice, as a break and after he discovers that his sub-atomic particle research is impossible. The first time they have a date and spend the evening together. The second time he proposes to Phoebe, but Phoebe has already accepted Mike's proposal.

    Roger

Phoebe dates Roger in "The One With The Boobies". Roger is a psychologist. He upsets the rest of the gang when he is able to predict all their feelings and determine why they act a certain way; for example, he determines that Chandler's parents were divorced and suggests that Ross may have intentionally married a lesbian to make Monica, the less favored sibling, feel better about herself. They all coin the phrase, "I hate that guy." Phoebe decides she hates him too and breaks up with him when he does the same thing to her.

    Duncan Sullivan

In "The One With Phoebe's Husband", it is revealed that Phoebe married her supposedly homosexual friend, Duncan, from Canada because he needed a green card. The events of the episode take place six months after this ceremony, when he re-enters Phoebe's life and tells her that he has decided that he is straight and needs a divorce because he is getting married to another woman. Phoebe is very upset by this because she was beginning to fall in love with him. Monica states that after Duncan left (the first time) that she stayed in her pajamas for a month and that she even saw her eat a cheeseburger. Phoebe signs the divorce papers and gives Duncan one last kiss before asking "So, your brother is straight, huh?"

Joey has not had many long-term relationships due to his commitment issues and lack of morals in that area. However he has repeatedly had one night stands with every woman in New York, or Manhattan at least. Rachel joked that he had gone out with every girl and was going around for a second time. In Central Perk he got the confidence to ask a girl ...

    Aurora

Chandler has a brief relationship with Aurora. Chandler loves the idea of only having sex with her but they later break up because she wants him to share her with three other men, one of whom is her husband.

    Janice

Chandler and his whiny nasal ex-girlfriend Janice have been on and off more than Ross and Rachel. Their relationship is one of the show's many signature recurring gags. When the show begins, they are together, but they soon break up as she is driving Chandler crazy. On the New Year's Eve of that year, Chandler is desperate to have a woman to kiss at midnight, so he calls her and they get together again. The same night he breaks up with her again, infuriating her. Two months later, they accidentally meet up again through a double date arranged by Joey, but Chandler breaks up with her again on Valentine's Day  due to her annoying character traits. By now though, Janice has wizened up and knows he will be back again, or to put it into her words: "Your voice calls out to me like a foghorn - Jaaaniiice, Jaaaaaaaaaniiice". He eventually begins an online relationship with a woman and when they decide to finally meet, it turns out it is Janice. They begin a romantic relationship where they are both very happy. They eventually break up when Joey catches Janice kissing her ex husband at his mattress store. After his break up with Kathy, he runs into Janice at a nail salon and she has just gotten divorced. He pretends he has to move to Yemen to avoid breaking up with her. Janice reappears several times throughout the series but does not strike up a relationship again, though when she is in labor for the second time she tells him it is his baby as a joke. Chandler twice employs a trick of pretending he still has feelings for her to get rid of her. When she is staying at the apartment he shares with Monica, he says it to make her leave, and when she wants to buy the house next to their new one, he pretends he has feelings for her and wants to have an affair so he and Monica do not have to run into her every day.

    Kathy

When they meet in Central Perk, Chandler immediately begins to flirt. However, she has already met Joey, who has used his irresistible charm on her. Chandler has an immense crush on her for the next few episodes. They are obviously better matched, and share a kiss on her birthday. He tells Joey and he shuns him. However, when Joey realizes how much they care for each other he gives them his blessing and they form a relationship. They have a fight however when Chandler accuses her of sleeping with a fellow cast mate because of how intimate they seemed in the play. Chandler goes to her place to reconcile, but they break up because she actually does end up sleeping with her co-star in spite of Chandler. After that he is depressed for a couple of episodes and the friends try and help him to get over her.

    Carol Willick

Carol is Ross' lesbian ex-wife, who came out before the pilot. Carol tells Ross that she is pregnant with his child in "The One With The Sonogram At The End" and is going to raise the baby with her partner, Susan Bunch. Carol and Susan were based on Marta Kauffman and David Crane's best friends in New York: "We didn't create them for any particular political reason or because of lesbian chic. It was just an opportunity to tell a really interesting story." Carol and Susan get married in season two and Ross gives Carol away since her parents are against the lesbian wedding. Carol and Ross have maintained a good friendship since their divorce and Ross has been able to put aside his differences with Susan. On Valentines Day in season one, Ross sees Carol alone at dinner and he comforts her leading to the exposure of his old feelings for her. Ross attempts to reconcile but she refuses saying that he has to move on and that the right woman will come along for him.

    Julie

Julie and Ross went to graduate school together and hadn't seen each other since until the season two premiere. Ross spends one week in China where they catch up and eventually start a romantic relationship. They return from China as a couple and Rachel is depressed by this as she was going to confront Ross about their feelings for each other. Rachel hates Julie but Monica and Julie become good friends since Julie is her brother's girlfriend. Julie and Ross decide to adopt a cat together and have it live with both of them since they want to take their relationship further. Rachel decides to confess her love for Ross at Central Perk one night. Ross is furious and decides not to get a cat with Julie. Ross and Rachel share a passionate kiss together and Ross decides to make a list of who to stay with. He has a lot of reasons to stay with Julie but his one reason to pick Rachel overpowered them all. He decides that he is in love with Rachel and breaks up with Julie. When Rachel finds out about the list, she breaks up with Ross, but they reunite in "The One With The Prom Video". Julie later starts to date Ross' look-alike, Russ.

    Bonnie

Bonnie is a friend of Phoebe's and is bald prior to being introduced to Ross. By the time of the episode's events, her hair has grown backs and she is consequently a very beautiful woman which makes Rachel extremely jealous. The gang go to the beach but Bonnie cannot join them due to work. While at the beach, Ross and Rachel start to flirt but Bonnie shows up since she was able to leave work early. Bonnie comes back from swimming in the ocean and she tells Rachel how she's considered re-shaving her head since it was so much easier to take care of that way. Rachel deviously encourages her to go through with it and Ross is disturbed to later learn that she has indeed shaved her head. Ross and Rachel kiss and reconcile which leads to Ross breaking up with Bonnie, but Rachel breaks up with Ross again when he refuses to take full responsibility for everything that went wrong in their relationship.
