Significance. Social science fiction is noteworthy on several levels: first, as a cultural phenomenon; second, as a medium of social commentary and criticism; and third (perhaps parenthetically) as a pleasant counterpoint to some of the more pedantic complacencies of the social scientists.
Social fiction is a broad term to describe any work of speculative fiction that features social commentary (as opposed to, say, hypothetical technology) in the foreground. Social science fiction is a subgenre thereof, where social commentary (cultural or political) takes place in a sci-fi universe.

Course Description. The label “social science fiction,” initially coined by Isaac Asimov in 1953 as a broad category to describe narratives focusing on the effects of novel technologies and scientific advances on society, became a pejorative leveled at a new group of authors that rose to prominence during the sixties and seventies.
7.3 Literature and Moral Development. Engagement with literature can be relevant in moral philosophy by offering knowledge by acquaintance, but also by providing philosophers with the opportunity to investigate the moral importance of specific abilities of discernment and understanding.
