Mission San Francisco Solano officially ceased to exist on November 3, 1834, when it was designated a First Class Parish. The Spanish missionaries were to be replaced by parish priests – the first was Fr. Lorenzo Quijas who had earlier been assigned to Sonoma and San Rafael.

San Francisco Solano, the last California mission, was founded in 1823 and rebuilt in 1913. It is part of Sonoma State Historic Park and has a restored church, museum, and quadrangle. The mission is located on the historic square of Sonoma, near the Bear Flag Monument and other historic sites.
