A murder–suicide is when a person kills someone else (murder), and then they kill themselves . No one is tracking the number of murder–suicides in the United States . However, medical studies estimate between 1,000 and 1,500 deaths per year in the United States are murder-suicides.
The incident was cited by The Shield writer Shawn Ryan as inspiration for main character Shane Vendrell's murder-suicide in the series finale episode, "Family Meeting," aired November 25, 2008.
