The Scott Fetzer Company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio by George H. Scott and Carl S. Fetzer. It began in a small machine shop as the George H. Scott Machine Co. in 1914. It incorporated as the Scott & Fetzer Machine Co. on November 30th, 1917, and moved to a bigger facility near Edgewater. In 1918, it shortened its name to Scott & Fetzer Co.

In 1914, The Scott Fetzer Company began as a machine shop in Cleveland, OH founded by George Scott and Carl Fetzer. Shortly after, inventor Jim Kirby, also from Cleveland, partnered with the businessmen to produce the first Kirby vacuum cleaner.
The Kirby Company (stylized as KIRBY) is a manufacturer of vacuum cleaners and home cleaning accessories, based in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. It is a division of the Scott Fetzer Company (also known as Scott & Fetzer) which in turn is part of Berkshire Hathaway. Dealers are located in over 50 countries throughout the world.

The Scott Fetzer Company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, is an American diversified manufacturer and marketer of products for the home, family, and industry comprising 33 brands, headquartered in Westlake, Ohio.
The company was founded in 1836 and manufactured farm equipment. In 1940 it acquired Joseph Hausfeld's company which was the manufacturer of an air-compressor called Pressure King and was renamed Campbell-Hausfeld. In 1971 Campbell Hausfeld was acquired by Scott Fetzer. In 2015 the company was acquired by The Marmon Group.
