- 1968: 360. Imported by Malcolm Bricklin—he later of Yugo fame, and designer of his own similarly unsuccessful Canada-built sports car —Subaru enters the U.S. market with this Japanese kei car.
- 1970: FF-1. The little-known follow-up to the 360 is closer in size to competing subcompacts, and it is offered as a coupe or a sedan. It’s also the first Subaru with a boxer engine (horizontally opposed cylinders) and front-wheel drive.
- 1973: DL and GL. Subaru’s newest subcompact arrives just in time for the first gas crisis. Good timing aside, the car is far from conventional. Like the FF-1, the DL/GL lineup is powered by a horizontally opposed four-cylinder driving the front wheels (then still a novelty).
- 1975: 4x4 Wagon. With the option of part-time four-wheel drive for the DL/GL station wagon, Subaru’s brand-defining moment arrives, although the company probably didn’t realize it at the time.
