Playback via Spotify's desktop client is broken due to changes in their catalogue access, but as far as I know the devs are trying to find a fix for that. Last.fm's own catalogue was disabled years ago, see this announcement: http://www.last.fm/announcements/subscriptions2014.

This proved difficult to support and has been officially discontinued. The Last.fm client is currently the only officially supported music player for playing customized Last.fm radio streams on desktop computers.

Honestly, I don't see Last.fm lasting much longer. Sonemic looks like it will be much better, and either way Last.fm could easily be wiped out by streaming services like Spotify just adding a few extra features (like in-depth statistics, upcoming events etc.).
