Roland has manufactured numerous instruments that have had lasting impacts on popular music, such as the Juno-106 synthesizer, TB-303 bass synthesizer, and TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines. Roland was also instrumental in the development of MIDI, a standardized means of synchronizing electronic instruments manufactured by different companies.
Roland's first synthesizer was Japan's first synthesizer, predating the Korg 700 by a handful of weeks. It was a strange instrument, offering 10 preset tones to which you could add vibrato, growl and portamento.
Ace Tone primarily manufactured electronic organs and guitar amplifiers, but Kakehashi’s passion was developing an electronic drum. After a few prototypes, he patented an “Automatic Rhythm Performance Device” in 1967. Kakehashi used a diode matrix circuit involving a number of inverted circuits connected to a counting circuit.
