In the wake of the experimental Mirage 4000, the first prototype of the Mirage 2000 made its maiden flight in 1978. But it was only in 1984 that its first version (2000 C) entered into service. In all, as many as twelve Air Force fighter squadrons have been equipped with the various versions of the aircraft.
On January 7, 2021, L'Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace (AAE; French Air and Space Force) received the first of 55 upgraded Mirage 2000Ds from Dassault Aviation. Since then, six more examples have been delivered, while 13 others are projected to have their upgrade work finished this year.
