May 28, 2018 · The Kipper Kids were the nexus of a collision of art, slapstick, music, performance and improvisation, often punctuated by seriously bent-outta-shape pop songs. One of their famous acts involved a boxer beating himself up. It was ritualistic violence . . . with as much adolescent humour (farting) as serious provocation.
Thus, from 1971, ‘The Kipper Kids’ were also known as ‘Harry and Harry Kipper.’ Von Haselberg and Routh, noted for their drastic, harshly loud, and often comic performance act, mostly performed in Europe from 1971 to 1975.

When they moved to Los Angeles in late 1974 at the invitation of the Long Beach Museum of Art, I heard about them because my friend, Venice video artist Nina Sobell (who had posed for my Black and White photo series “ Ladies in Ladies Rooms ”), married Brian.
The Kipper Kids(Brian Routh and Martin von Haselberg) Up Yer Bum was performed by The Kipper Kids at the Acme Gallery, London in 1979. Steve Thorne gives a vivid description in a review published in the first ever Performance Magazine in June of that year.
From 1971 to 1974, the Kipper Kids performed in Britain and in Europe. They went to Los Angeles, California, in 1974 on the advice of David Ross (video curator at the Long Beach Museum of Art), whom they had met following their 1973 performance at the Rudolf Zwirner Gallery in Cologne.
