- On the drive from their current home in Tennessee to Bakersfield, California, where they are planning on moving, Willie Jack abandons Novalee in the small town of Sequoyah, Oklahoma. With no food and very little money, Novalee ends up secretly living in the town's Walmart.

A sickly and homeless Novalee is forced to live in the Walmart, undetected. Novalee also becomes acquainted with surly librarian Forney Hull (James Frain) who cares for his alcoholic sister Mary Elizabeth (Margaret Hoard). During a thunderstorm, Novalee, alone at Walmart, goes into labor. Forney, who has followed Novalee to the Walmart, smashes through the Walmart window to help deliver her child, whom she names Americus.
Becoming alone without support Novalee continues to believe in bad luck, but Thelma takes back Novalee to her house, where they live a full life. Novalee’s life is returning to normal; she plants her tree near Thelma’s house and good luck is slowly returning to her, and her daughter Americus has become much attached to Forney, because she feels paternal love.
