Mary was raised by her grandparents, Roy and Mary Agnes Brandon, due to her mother passing away when Mary was five years old. Mary graduated from Corning High School with the Class of 1944. On June 1, 1946, she married Paul Robert Loudon in Creston, Iowa. Mary worked as a cook at St. Malachy School for seven years.
