Mar 27, 2024 · Arthur Mitchell, American dancer, choreographer, and director who was the first African American to become a principal dancer with a major ballet troupe, New York City Ballet. Some of his best-known roles included those in Agon (1957) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1962). He later cofounded Dance Theatre of Harlem.
