- Aretha Franklin. One of the biggest stars of the 60s, Aretha Franklin, was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and started singing gospel music when she was a child.
- Janis Joplin. Singer and songwriter Janis Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas. She began singing in high school and continued throughout college. In 1963, she traveled to San Francisco and in 1966, joined the band Big Brother and the Holding Company.
- Tina Turner. Hailing from Brownsville, Tennessee, Tina Turner has been called the Queen of Rock and Roll. She began her career singing alongside Ike Turner before embarking on a solo career.
- Diana Ross. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Diana Ross spent her youth in both Alabama and Detroit. When Ross was 15, she joined a singing group called the Primettes.
- Diana Ross. Many would agree that Diana Ross is one of the best vocalists of the 60s. She rose to fame as the member of the Supremes, a group that remains one of the world’s best-selling girl groups of all time.

- Brenda Lee. Brenda Mae Tarpley, better known as Brenda Lee, was a true creative force in the 60s. Although she rose to fame earlier, the 60s was a time when she experimented with different genres such as country, rockabilly and pop.

- Aretha Franklin. Sitting at the top of our list of the greatest female singers of the ’60s, Aretha Franklin was the real “Queen of Soul.” By the late 1960s, Franklin became an unstoppable force in the charts as well as a figure of black empowerment throughout the Civil Rights Movement.
- Nina Simone. Although the nickname “The High Priestess of Soul,” Nina Simone wasn’t tied down by any musical genres. Instead, she sang everything with conviction and used her musical platform to speak out and take a stand.
- Etta James. By the young age of five, Etta James was known as the gospel prodigy in her Los Angeles community. Blessed with one of the most powerful voices in music, it’s not hard to agree with acclaimed producer Jerry Wexler that she is “the greatest of all modern blues singers.”
- Shirley Bassey. The only of the female singers of the ’60s on our list to come from the small country of Wales, Shirley Bassey was one of the first black British entertainers to achieve national and global fame.
