First published in 1973, Pedro Pietri’s “Puerto Rican Obituary” is an epic poem of the Nuyorican movement that has been widely anthologized. Literary scholars and critics often refer to Pietri, a Puerto Rican immigrant to the US, as the poet laureate of this movement, which began in the 1960s in New York City.

Pedro Pietri (March 21, 1944 – March 3, 2004) was a Puerto Rican poet and playwright and one of the co-founders of the Nuyorican Movement. He was considered by some as the poet laureate of the Nuyorican Movement .
