Aug 10, 2011 · Less than two years before the Games began, the IOC was rocked by a scandal as it became apparent that several IOC members had received gifts from the Salt Lake City Bid Committee that could be considered bribes. Security was also raised, as the Games opened just five months after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
Overview. The roller coaster saga of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games began when Salt Lake City was selected as the host city at the 1995 IOC Session. Salt Lake City had bid for 1998 but lost out to Nagano, and its 2002 bid was so strong that the IOC needed only one round of voting to award the Utah city the bid, almost by acclamation.
Germany led in overall medals (36) for the second consecutive Winter Games. Immediately following the Games, Germany was also the gold medal leader with twelve. With 36 total medals, Germany set a record for most total medals at a single Winter Olympics edition.
Athletes from Australia and China won their respective nations' first Winter Olympic gold medals, while the Croatian and Estonian delegations each won their first Winter Olympic medals of any color. Of the 407 medalists, 55 athletes won more than one medal of any color at the Games.
