Ernest Augustus (5 June 1771 – 18 November 1851) was the fifth son and eighth child of George III of the United Kingdom. Ernest Augustus was made Duke of Cumberland by his father and became King of Hanover on 28 June 1837, on the death of his brother William IV of the United Kingdom . His successor in Hanover was his only son, George V of Hanover .
Ernest Augustus then renounced his rights in favour of his son, the Federal Council lifted its veto, and the young prince became a sovereign ruler as Ernest Augustus, duke of Brunswick (November 1, 1913). He abdicated with other German princes, on November 8, 1918.
