May 17, 2016 · (Barnwell County; 2020 pop. 4,260). Originally located on the old Stage Coach Road from Charleston to Augusta, Barnwell was first called Red Hill. Like Barnwell County, the town was named for John Barnwell of Beaufort. The first county courthouse was built in 1800 on five acres given by Benjamin Odom.
Public Information. History of Barnwell County. Barnwell County was called Winton County in 1785. The County was then named for John Barnwell, a Revolutionary War figure in 1800, the same year Barnwell died. Barnwell County grew with the introduction of the SC railroad.

Located at the southwestern edge of South Carolina, the district originally encompassed 1,440 square miles but lost most of its territory to the creation of Aiken County (1871), Bamberg County (1897), and Allendale County (1919).

Barnwell, county, southern South Carolina, U.S. It consists of a low-lying region on the Coastal Plain bordered to the northeast by the South Fork Edisto River and to the southwest by the Savannah River border with Georgia. The county is also drained by the Salkehatchie River. Wetlands and pine woods dominate the region.
