Feb 2, 2023 · The Dobro is a resonator guitar that was invented by John Dopyera in 1928. He and his brother, Rudy, formed the National String Instrument Corporation and in 1936 the Dobro name was licensed to the Gibson Guitar Company. Gibson introduced the Dobro Model 37 in 1937, however production was discontinued in 1942.
John Dopyera was born in 1893 in Dolná Krupá in Slovakia, the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father played and constructed his own violins. Under his father’s guidance, John built his first fiddle. In 1908, at the age of fifteen, he moved to the United States, to the city of Los Angeles.
