Martial Solal (born August 23, 1927) [1] is a French jazz pianist and composer. Biography. Solal was born in Algiers, French Algeria, [1] to Algerian Jewish parents. He was persuaded to study clarinet, saxophone, and piano by his mother, who was an opera singer. [2] . He was expelled from school in 1942 because of his parents' Jewish ancestry.

Arguably the greatest French jazz pianist (also a composer and big band leader), Martial Solal began his recording career in 1953, playing on Django Reinhardt’s last studio session. Born to French parents in Algiers on 23 August, 1927, he was encouraged by his mother, an opera singer, to play clarinet, saxophone and piano.
Four Keys is an album by pianist Martial Solal with saxophonist Lee Konitz, guitarist John Scofield and bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen recorded in West Germany in 1979 and released on the MPS label. The album was also released in the US on Pausa Records.
