Coronaviridae is a family of enveloped, positive-strand RNA viruses which infect amphibians, birds, and mammals. The group includes the subfamilies Letovirinae and Orthocoronavirinae; the members of the latter are known as coronaviruses . The viral genome is 26–32 kilobases in length.
Since 2019, the origin of SARS-CoV-2, causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), added to this episodic history of zoonotic transmission events. Here we introduce a phylogenetic analysis of 2006 unique and complete genomes of different lineages of Orthocoronavirinae.

ICTV announced "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)" as the name of the new virus on 11 February 2020. This name was chosen because the virus is genetically related to the coronavirus responsible for the SARS outbreak of 2003. While related, the two viruses are different.

The subfamily Orthocoronavirinae is divided into 4 genera: Alphacoronavirus (Alpha-CoV), Betacoronavirus (Beta-CoV), Deltacoronavirus (Delta-CoV), and Gammacoronavirus (Gamma-CoV) (Wong et al. 2019).

Apr 26, 2021 · Orthocoronavirinae consists of four genera. Gammacoronavirus (GammaCoVs) and Deltacoronavirus (DeltaCoVs) are coronaviruses that originated from Aves (birds), with only a few known lineages that infect mammals (Woo et al., 2014; Duraes‐Carvalho et al., 2015 ).
