Logan County was created by the Virginia General Assembly, May 7, 1824, from parts of Giles, Tazewell, Cabell, and Kanawha counties. The county lies south of Charleston in the heart of the southern West Virginia coalfields.
Logan County, in southwestern West Virginia (WV), was formed in 1824 and named for Logan the Orator, a Mingo tribal leader. Its seat is at Logan. Aracoma, the daughter of Cornstalk, a Shawnee tribal leader, settled on the Guyandotte River.
