A Brief History of Mahaska County. February 5, 1844 marks the beginning of Mahaska County's history. On that date Iowa's Territorial Legislature enacted the law authorizing the organization of a county named Mahaska, after one of the most noted chiefs of the Indian nation known as the Ioways.

Oskaloosa is a city in, and the county seat of, Mahaska County, Iowa, United States. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, Oskaloosa was a national center of bituminous coal mining. The population was 11,558 in the 2020 U.S. census.
Mahaska County has over 1,722 acres of forests, wetlands, prairies and parks to explore. The Mahaska County Conservation Board manages 21 separate parks, river accesses and wildlife areas with over six miles of maintained trails.
