Oklahoma's bustling downtown area draws in plenty of travelers seeking out Mother Road adventures. Sapulpa's history is steeped in a lively mix of Native American soul – the town is named after Chief Sapulpa, a Lower Creek Indian from Alabama – and the early days of oil.
The county seat of Creek County, Sapulpa is situated approximately twelve miles southwest of Tulsa along Interstate 44. State Highways 33 and 97 and Historic Route 66 also lead travelers to Sapulpa.
Sapulpa was perhaps best known as being the home of globally recognized Frankoma Pottery. For decades, free factory tours were offered to visitors, so they could watch skilled artisans make pottery as they had since the 1930s.
Sapulpa is the county seat for Creek County and is located in northeast Oklahoma's Green Country. It occupies an area over which 6 nations have flown their flags – Spain, France, England, Mexico, the Choctaw Indian Nation, and the United States.
Sapulpa was born of full-blood Creek Native American from the Georgia-Alabama area. As always noted when biographies of Sapulpa are written, Sapulpa was not actually a ‘chief’ of his tribe, but did have a place of influence. Sapulpa was well-educated, well-traveled, and learned to speak English.
