Apr 30, 2024 · Bemidji, city, seat (1897) of Beltrami county, north-central Minnesota, U.S. It lies on Lake Bemidji, about 150 miles (240 km) northwest of Duluth. Bemidji was established in 1888. Its name, first applied to the lake and then to the Ojibwa chief who in 1883 became the area’s first permanent.
Bemidji is a beautiful, medium sized city with interesting people. Coming into the city from the south along Highway 71, visitors become immediately aware that they are in a city and not one of the many towns along the way.
