Charlestown is the oldest neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. Also called Mishawum by the Massachusett, it is located on a peninsula north of the Charles River, across from downtown Boston, and also adjoins the Mystic River and Boston Harbor waterways.

Originally known as Mishawum, Charlestown proper was founded in 1628 and included what is now Woburn, Malden, Stoneham, and South Medford. On June 17, 1775, Charlestown was the site of one of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War.
