Located in the valley of the Arkansas River in northwestern Wagoner County, Coweta is intersected by State Highways 72, 51, and 51B and is near the Muskogee Turnpike. Tulsa lies thirty miles to the northwest and Muskogee thirty miles to the southeast.

Before statehood, when the Five Tribes or Five Civilized Tribes were moved to Oklahoma from the Eastern United States, the area that is now Coweta became part of the Creek Nation.

Coweta is located in Wagoner County, just minutes south and east of Tulsa on Highway 51. Coweta is experiencing tremendous growth with numerous new single-family subdivisions, several multi-family developments being planned, and an abundance of new commercial and retail developments in progress.
On an elevated, undulating prairie, at an altitude of about 800 feet above sea level in the choicest part of the Creek Nation lies the prosperous, attractive town of Coweta...such is the location of this live town. A happier, a more fortunate choice for a town location could not have been made.
It is one of several towns in Oklahoma with an all African-American population that formed in the years following the American Civil War when African-American settlers, known as "Exodusters", Journeyed West to escape poverty and racism.
