Essex is really a "child of three rivers," the Connecticut, the Falls, and the Mud. These three waterways have played vital roles in the evolution of Essex, at different times, due to the demands of agriculture, pre-industrialization, or industrialization.
With a population today of only 6,500, Essex lies along the Connecticut River, just five miles North of its mouth in Old Saybrook, where the River meets Long Island Sound. It consists of three villages—Centerbrook, Essex, and Ivoryton—each with its own post office and zip code, but all part of the same government and school system.

Essex, in Middlesex County, is located in southern Connecticut and lies on the Connecticut River. Originally part of Saybrook and called the Potapaug Quarter, it separated and became a town in 1852, receiving the name Essex in 1854.
