Taft (formerly Moron, Moro, and Siding Number Two) is a city in the foothills at the extreme southwestern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California. Taft is located 32 miles (51 km) west-southwest of Bakersfield, at an elevation of 955 feet (291 m). The population was 9,327 at the 2010 census.

The City of Taft was incorporated in 1910; however, the community of Greater Taft includes the county areas of South Taft, parts of Taft Heights to the southwest, and Ford City to the north. The official population of Taft City is nearly 10,000; Greater Taft boosts a population of 19,000.

Taft is a small community at the eastern foot of the Temblor mountains, in Kern County in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is not much of a vacation destination although there are sites to see including the oil museum, a historic fort and the Carrizo Plains National Monument.
The Historic Fort, a slightly larger replica of Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento, was dedicated on May 22, 1940, 100 years after the original Sutter’s Fort was built. The project was a joint venture between the Works Project Administration (WPA) and the County of Kern in 1938.
