Tucumcari (pop 7,000) sits along the I-40 corridor and old US Route 66 and is better known for its billboards that span for hundreds of miles either side of town, luring tired travelers with promises of numerous and comfortable accommodations, than it is for its recreational opportunity.
Diverse cultures have lived and flourished in the Tucumcari area for ages. Traces of the oldest civilizations in North America, dating back 10,000 years, have been found throughout the Tucumcari region.
Tucumcari, a town of 5,300 people (2020), is the county seat of Quay County, New Mexico and home to Mesalands Community College. Founded in 1901 as Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad construction camp Six Shooter Siding, it was renamed for Tucumcari Mountain in 1908.
Mar 22, 2024 · Tucumcari, city, seat (1903) of Quay county, eastern New Mexico, U.S., in the Canadian River valley. Lying along the important Goodnight-Loving cattle trail, it was established as a construction base for the El Paso and Rock Island Railroad in 1901.
