USP Leavenworth, a civilian facility, is the oldest of three major prisons built on federal land in Leavenworth County, Kansas. It is separate from, but often confused with, the United States Disciplinary Barracks (USDB), a military facility located on the adjacent Fort Leavenworth army post.
Apr 2, 2024 · Prison officials say the facility is in modified operations and has beefed up security to investigate a report of a firearm entering the facility. In letters, inmates say it’s more like a lockdown.

The original historic U.S. Disciplinary Barracks or "USDB" for short, on Fort Leavenworth, allows visitors. A person can tour the grounds and read about the buildings and residents on the Wayfinding Tour in the courtyard. The large "Castle" that housed the military inmates was demolished in 2004.
USP Leavenworth is located in Leavenworth, Kansas, approximately 25 miles from Kansas City. Between the penitentiary and satellite camp, the facilities have a total inmate population of 1,845 male prisoners, with 1,397 inmates at the penitentiary and 448 inmates at the camp.
