Welch is a city in and the county seat of McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,590 at the 2020 census; the 2021 census estimate put the population at 1,914, due to the Federal Correctional Institution, McDowell leaving city limits. Welch was incorporated as a city in 1893.
Welch, West Virginia (WV), the county seat of McDowell County, was incorporated in 1894 and named for Isiah A. Welch, a captain in the Confederate Army. Situated on the Tug Fork River at the mouth of Elkhorn Creek, in the southernmost West Virginia coalfields, the city boomed in the early 1900s.

The county seat was moved there from Perryville in 1891. There were no bridges or wagons in this extremely mountainous.
