  1. Feb 21, 2021 · The demo went to Whedon, and the song was cemented in sitcom history. The initial notes come from an organ (horror movie throwbacks there), then it segues into a peppier rock tone, and ultimately an electric guitar riff throws off youthful vibes.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer Theme" is an instrumental piece composed by Charlie Dennis, Parry Gripp, and Steve Sherlock from Nerf Herder for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. It plays in the opening title and closing credits of 143 of the 144 episodes of the television show and during the episode "Prophecy Girl."

An orchestral version of the track was produced under the name "Main Title" for the musical episode "Once More, with Feeling."

According to Joss Whedon, Alyson Hannigan introduced the Nerf Herder's music to him. Parry Gripp described how the band got to produce the theme:

"[The production staff] had hired some guy in Hollywood, some famous theme song composer to come up with a theme, and they didn't like the one he came up with. So, they were kind of on a low budget, and what they did was asked a bunch of bands, local bands — we live about an hour and a half away from Hollywood — to come up with theme song ideas."

Nerf Herder wrote the original melody before they were asked to submit a demo for a theme tune, which was not written specifically for the show:

"We did the theme song before the show was on the air. It was a song that had already been written, but we really didn't know where to take it. I had some ideas — it was originally going to have some kind of science fiction theme, which is weird, because we don't do songs like that. I remember having the title of 'Outer Space Rock' or something like that; that was a working thing."

  5. The "Buffy theme" is the music played alongside the opening credits of the show. The theme itself has no lyrics; it begins with several notes played by an organ, a signifier for horror in movie culture from the 1930s onwards, followed by upbeat rock music.
