Comedians make versatile dramatic actors. Their dark spirits rarely glow like a movie star and bold choices subvert expectations hammered in by their career history. Like Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine and The Truman Show, Kristen Wiig is becoming the most capable of her peers, translating her off-beat comedic presence into vulnerability.
Corrosive behavior in Friends with Kids, Girl Most Likely's drifting housewife, a romantic lead for Ben Stiller in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and her most complex character yet, a carnal, misguided, empathetic twin sister in the upcoming Skeleton Twins.
Hateship Loveship notices that potential in Wiig without ever nurturing it to a compelling angle. It's a quirky indie dramedy in all the worst ways. So many smart choices, meandering to a nothing conclusion.
Based on a short story by Nobel Prize winner Alice Munro, Hateship Loveship stars Wiig as Johanna, a caretaker-for-hire who jumps from hospice to nannying when a family patriarch (Nick Nolte) requests her services. With his granddaughter Sabitha (Hailee Steinfeld) coming of age under the wings of her rebellious friend Edith (Sami Gayle) and his son-in-law, Ken (Guy Pearce), burning out like an ashy cigarette butt, Mr. McCauley seeks back-up to fix his broken home. On paper, Johanna's the perfect choice. Integrated into the family, she's a silent, unknowing destroyer of worlds. Hard to blame her.
Hateship Loveship showcases Kristen Wiig's Serious Actress potential, but never offers a compelling or smart enough tale to do her efforts justice.

The characters in Hateship eventually become interesting although at first it might be difficult to relate with them. The ending felt a bit rushed, but I had a decent time with this movie and ended up enjoying it more than I expected to (although not nearly as much as my father did).

Fortunately, the filmmakers get to the moment of truth halfway through the film instead of waiting until the ending. When that revelation happens, the picture fundamentally changes. From then on out, all bets are off and the story and its characters could go any which way.
Apr 11, 2014 · Hateship Loveship understands that and, despite its seemingly canned plot, commits to delivering a glimpse into that truth spiced with the joy of optimism rather than the easy placebo of certainty. Hateship Loveship is now in limited release and available on VOD.
